Jerusalem Old city
Jerusalem is full of tensions and emotions. The high degree of discord remains a constant undercurrent. Jerusalemites have learnt to adapt to a complex reality and to ignore its grating aspects. As for the Old City, it resembles an exuberant theatre set, textured like an ancient parchment covered with Holy Scriptures over which endless graffiti has been scribbled.
I have always felt irresistibly drawn towards the Old City, a tiny microcosm of hardly 1 square km behind walls, a place of history and faith, a Holy City for all three monotheistic religions. Most fascinating is the relatively peaceful mode of coexistence which thrives between the different communities despite the tensions.
This series is a sample of an on-going project spanning nearly 20 years, an attempt to decipher the fascinating groundswell that constantly sweeps Jerusalem Old City.
